Jon Fine is a filmmaker and musician. Over the years he’s worked as a producer, DP, director and editor. His work is as far reaching and diverse as his interests.
In 2016, Jon directed a historic US-Cuba co-production hosted by Will Smith & Quincy Jones broadcasting live from a makeshift control room in the basement of the Gran Teatro de Habana. The following year, in St Petersburg, he directed an equally challenging US-Russia co-production of “Jazz Day: Live from the Mariinski Theater”. Since 2012, he’s directed 7 years of UNESCO’s Jazz Day celebrations live from Istanbul, Osaka, Paris, NY and Melbourne.
From 2010-2017, he worked with Apple’s notoriously secretive Media Arts Lab in Cupertino California as lead editor on their iconic launch films introducing the world to iPhone, iPad, Facetime, Siri and edited “Designed by Apple” the only short film they’ve ever released about Jony Ive’s Industrial Design Studio.
Jon co-wrote and edited “The House on Coco Road”, a feature documentary produced by actor/activist Danny Glover about the US invasion of Grenada, he joined Carlos Santana on his historic Emissaries for Peace Tour in Nagasaki and Hiroshima and shot, edited and co-produced the award-winning film “Still Bill” celebrating songwriting legend Bill Withers.
He spent a year traveling around the world filming the creative process of Jazz masters Herbie Hancock & Wayne Shorter, initiated a country wide health campaign to combat malaria in Benin with UNESCO & Angelique Kidjo, and produced and edited “River of Gold”, a feature documentary on illegal gold mining in Peru with war photographer Ron Haviv.
His footage of the unlawful arrests of over 300 anti-war protesters during the 2004 Republican Convention in New York led to a landmark lawsuit and formed the backbone of “The Afterparty”, a documentary he co-wrote and produced featuring Barack Obama and Andre 3000.
As a composer, he scored an Emmy nominated short for the Atlantic and wrote and produced the music for Holy Forest an acclaimed album recorded with artists from the US & The Gambia.
He’s consulted with Google’s Empathy Lab on a series of videos exploring A.I., edited a 200 screen video installation for architect Daniel Libeskind’s pavilion at the 2015 World Expo and cut renowned photographer Andrew Zuckerman’s documentary series Wisdom and Music.
He’s directed live concerts featuring Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Chaka Khan, Esperanza Spalding, 50 Cent, Sean Paul, and Joss Stone and has interviewed music legends Ravi Shankar, Hugh Masekela, Annie Lennox and Al Jarreau. He’s shot plenty of music videos and has edited ad campaigns for the Rainforest Alliance, (RED), Apple, GAP, Puma, Jameson, Clinique and Barney’s. His award winning shorts and films have been screened worldwide.
Jon currently lives in upstate NY, with his wife and two kids.
